Y8W6 The Kiss of 2006

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=8464211

=============Revised Version================
Stand real close when the light's just right
See the scar on my face from the fight that night
After the kiss of 2006
Stand real close when my guard is down
See the scar on my heart; she's not around
After the kiss of 2006

Fighting who I am in subtle ways
Losing my voice; you twist what I say
Change what I thought; think what a change overcame me
After the kiss of 2006

Stand real close when my cheeks are wet
See the scars on my thoughts cause I can't forget
The kiss of 2006
Stand real close when I'm looking 'round
See the scar on my soul; lost in the crowd
After the kiss of 2006

Fighting who I am not letting go
Losing my thoughts; you twist what I know
Change what I see; saw what a change overcame me
After the kiss of 2006

Isolation transformation radiation illumination

Brandishing my scars; no more games
Nothing to hide; no more shame
If I went back I'd do it all the same
Just for the kiss of 2006

So I again, looked for something different from you and you did it. Something a little more standard. You surprised me, but in a good way. Loved your scars and how you worked them in and especially liked your phrasing for 2006. Worked well.

The last two verses . . . . . . not quite sure. I understand the sentiment. Just doesn't grab me the way the rest of the song did.

And, as always, MORE!

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the listen and post.

Do you mean last 2 verses as:
Finding who I am in subtle ways;
Speaking my voice; say what I say
Change what I thought; think what a change overcame me

Finding who I am not letting go
Thinking my thoughts; know what I know
Change what I see; saw what a change overcame me
After the kiss of 2006

If so, the first part of the song is bemoaning a bad experience....the bridge [Isolation transformation radiation illumination] is the change of attitude/perspective....the last "two" verses is the new perspective on the experience...the idea was to change from the hurt perspective to the growth or learning from experience perspective....I am open if you have any clarifying suggestions :D

Feedback?

Thanks, Neil.

Yep, those are them. Don't know if I can articulate what I want to say.

Fighting who I am not letting go
Losing my thoughts; you twist what I know
Change what I see; saw what a change overcame me
After the kiss of 2006

This verse does a great job of summing up the experience of the kiss. It works and says alot. I think from here I would like you to somehow continue working with your scars. They were a really effective part of most of your song. Not sure how . . . . healing . . . . . what they represent in the present . . . . . . badges of honor or survival . . . . . notches of experience . . . . . .

Anyway, just some thoughts . . . .

Ok. I'll put my muse and subconscious to work while I take the kids to a Christmas party today

I do like the new finish. The transformation seems to have created a stronger, better person.
If I went back I'd do it all the same

Adds a new dimension, the growth factor was worth it.

Nice work!

A little bit late with my comments, but I'll post it anyway:
It bothered me at first that the lyrics are so abstract, but after listening to it a few times the abstractness is the thing which makes the song exciting to listen to.

And for some reason I keep hearing this as a country song.

Hi James,

I like the rewrite, well done. I don't think there's anything I would change here

Cheers

I'm glad to hear it grew on you. Regarding the country flavor, I did put a bit of twang on it, but it's more an indie-pseudo country than pure country.

Thanks, Christiaan.

aw, I love your scars, as well! :D

and the melody and all that! great!

was wondering whether these "fighting" parts, e.g.
Fighting who I am in subtle ways
Losing my voice; you twist what I say
Change what I thought; think what a change overcame me
After the kiss of 2006 , are to be understood as
[she did this to me]
[that happened as a consequence] [she did that to me, too]
[that happened as a consequence] [i've changed
since then]
? I wasn't quite sure who did the fighting and who did what in these bits.. just wanted to know if I got your meaning there

cheers,
straycat.

You've got the gist of it down. :D The fighting part is the idea of someone getting under your skin and become so much a part of you, they change who you are and at times you realize it and accept it and at times you think...."this isn't me talking....these aren't my thoughts".
...since this is a songwriting forum, I think we can share some meanings we wouldn't otherwise necessarily to the "general public"....For this song, I personified "cancer" I had a surgery and treatment for sinus cancer during 2006...not what I was expecting at 35 years old  , but needless to say, the whole experience was quite life impacting....Thankfully I've had nothing but clean bills of health at my routine checkups. :D

...so the deeper meaning was it wasn't an experience I would have chosen, but I learned from it.....the layer up is the idea "better to have love and lost than to have never have loved at all" The surface meaning is someone was hurt by another in a relationship but grew from the experience.

Thanks for asking for clarification.

James
