Quote Robert Duvall as Kilgore in Apocalypse Now

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning"

Napalm in the Morning

He recalls the smell of napalm in the morning
Better than the scent of her perfume
And the pills numbed the pain
No longer mask the memories
As the shadows of the past engulf his room

When he came home to the cries and shouts of anger
Found it hard to understand what he had done
At the age of 21
He believed in what they told him
So he enlisted and they issued him a gun

Why do these old nightmares still haunt him
A child running naked from the flames
Why do these same visions have to taunt him
Since ' 69 he's never been the same

He thouhgt that he could put it all behind him
But some thing in his soul would not let go
The girl that he had wed
Didn't understand the changes
And she couldn't love a man she did not know

Why do these old nightmares still haunt him
A child running naked from the flames
Why do these same visions have to taunt him
Since ' 69 he's never been the same

So he'll recalls the smell of napalm in the morning
When he only wants the scent of her perfume
Takes pills to numb the pain
And tries to mask the memories
Still the shadows of the past engulf his room

Great job, John. Of course, now I can't get the picture of the girl running in flames out of my head! What a powerful image. I actually was "the girl tht he wed" and can very much relate to this song. As a matter of fact, I think I'll print this out and give a copy to my son. I think he'll appreciate it as well.
I hope our current batch of soldiers don't suffer the same fate.

What kind of music are you hearing?

Hi John

I know I replied to this song on Friday , as I reservations on the use of this line .

"Since ' 69 he's never been the same "

But obviously the gremlins have been in and deleted some posts I know Paul had the same thing happen to him . But never mind we'll all get over it hey  ..

I don't know what it is exactly about that line , but for some strange reason it stands out , not especially in a bad way ...( hope you understand what I am trying to say ) ..

BTW I have been listening to your
" Time for making Love " song alot over the week-end

That is so darn good

Hilch :?:

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

Thank's Hilch

I know what you mean about the line sticking out
and think it will work that way.

I'm not quite done with the music yet but it is
coming along and I hope to post it soon.

Yes the "gremlin" did make off with my response and Paul's
and Time has not been on my side this week.

Hi Celt

Really good blend of the image of the girl with the line of 'Napalm in the morning' and the flashback that obviously still affects his everyday existence.

Bit mixed up with tenses which tended to distract me a little - I'm easily distracted though - but still quite a powerful piece.

good stuff

Bob

Hi John,

My connection to GuitarNoise seems to be all over the place at the moment. I know I replied to you before, but it dissapeared and a whole lot of new posts have just appeared, so I suspect that the Hosting service is switching over to backup versions of ther forum periodically. Anyway,

I like your song and I'm definitely hearing a heavy piano and military style durm pattern in there, just like Jack Johnson's "Its All Understood" off Brushfire Fairytales.

Good work

Cheers

Paul

John, that is incredible! I've said it before and I'll say it again: You sound like John Prine!

Kathy,

I am honored by your compliment.

As you may have guessed Prine's Sam Stone
was a big influence on this song.

Your comments were also an influence
in getting this recorded.

I felt if someone who had been through it could
relate then it was worth my best effort.

Thank You

John
