I figured I could do with a good old punk rock/psychobilly song. So here's a little song 'bout little old me. Foul language warning (1 word). Enjoy!

Speedin' home from work
Headin' to the downtown dive
Beers and punk rock shows
Love to hear that music live

Because I'm a punk rock redneck
Lovin' my beer and suicide girls
Give me the Misfits
I'll be a wreck
Lovin' life as a punk rock redneck

I can't imagine a better time
Beer in hand and band on stage
I'm head bangin' and ska skankin'
Power chords are all the rage

Because I'm a punk rock redneck
Lovin' my beer and suicide girls
Give me the Misfits
I'll be a wreck
Lovin' life as a punk rock redneck

Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys
All the amp dials turned to 10
I'll be listening to this till I'm dead
"Hey guys, play that s*** again!"

Because I'm a punk rock redneck
Lovin' my beer and suicide girls
Give me the Misfits
I'll be a wreck
Lovin' life as a punk rock redneck

The good ol sensor strikes again

Yeah I know what you had and what you originally had does work really well ..

One question only because I have never heard of this saying ..

Suicide girls ?? Means one thing to me but I am sure it might not be what I am thinking you mean , can you tell me what that means ?

Apart from that this is quite good , I like how you got Dead Kennedys in there along with the Sex pistols , nice job ..

Cheers

Trev...

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

Suicide Girls refers to a pornographic/art site depicting your "typical" "alternative lifestyle" woman. That is goth/punk/emo/insert billy genre girls with tattoos and piercings. Tattoos and women go together like peanut butter and jelly for me. Anyways, suicide girls in the song refers to punk/emo/goth chicks with lots of tattoos.

Personally I do find it quite odd that there is censorship in a lyric forum. Not my forum though.

First of all thanks for the explanation of the Suicide girls. Now that I know what it means that line has a great “ring” to it….OK….soooo (God, I feel like an idiot) what is “ska skankin”?
Anyway good start. It will be interesting to see how it evolves in the next coming weeks

Blessings. Olav

Ska is a type of music, and I am referring to the third wave ska-punk stuff (punk rock with horns if you can imagine). Skanking is a type of ska dance.

You learn something new every day - I always understood ska to be the transitional period between calypso and reggae, round about '63 - in fact I think the Skatalite's version of "Guns of Navarone" was accepted as the first real ska record....

But I didn't know "skanking" was a dance....I thought it was a reference to the guitar sound.....

Ska was a big favourite with the mods in the mid 60's, came back in a big way in the late 70's with bands like the Specials and Madness over here in the UK - usually referred to as the "Two-tone" sound, A - After the record label, and B - after the two-tone suits a lot of the bands wore....

A lot of punk bands over here were influenced by reggae/ska, most noticeably the Clash - check out some of their early stuff like "White Man In Hammersmith Palais"....

Anyway - to the song.....sounds like you had fun writing it....I'm not too sure what "psychobilly" is - guessing a cross between punk and rockabilly, sounds interesting anyway....

As a guy who loves watching live music and having a few beers, you conjured up the perfect atmosphere for me - smoky club, rockin' band, few beers......sounds like my kind of night out!!!!

Good song, Drunkrock......

:D :D :D

Thanks for updating us of different generations with the terminology.

I think the song works very well. In the confines of the assignment
you kept it simple and left room to work in whatever Bob throws at
us next week.

It very well could be. I was told by a friend that skanking was ska dancing; he also told me chicken picking was fingerpicked powerchords. I now assume he was pulling my leg as he's been playing guitar for 12 years now. Oh well, as long as the audience can find some for of meaning from it that is approriate to the subject matter.

Yep, you can definitely see the influence of ska in the clash, but I was thinking more modern bands: Less than Jake, Mighty Mighty Boss Tones, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and my favourite locals, The Barrymores ( http://www.myspace.com/thebarrymores )
.I'm not too sure what "psychobilly" is - guessing a cross between punk and rockabilly, sounds interesting anyway....

Excellent way of describing it; and like many other forms, has many sub genres; my favourite being horrorbilly. Reverend Horton Heat, The Matadors, and The Creepshow are all good bands to check out in this genre. http://www.subculturecollective.com has many psychobilly podcasts, I recommend checking it out. It's also the genre that inspired my inquiry into upright bass in the bass forum; a very "showy" instrument in this genre.

Glad you liked it Vic, and thanks Celt.

I am definitely considering buying a tele, that's for sure. Though I might prefer a strat...or a LP copy... I have no idea what I want. But that is an excellent suggestion, I'll add it to my notes on this song.

I really like the song, but doesn't the use of the word heck kind of go against the whole idea. Would the punk rock redneck say I'm gonna give 'em heck?

In my mind I imagine the phrase "punk rock red neck" as 1.. 2.. 3.. 4.. shouted along with the crowd. So maybe you could slant rhyme it along with "I don't give a f**k". Other rhyme options maybe "neck" "wreck" "sick" "trainwreck". Just some thoughts.

lavadave:

Thanks for the inspiration. I don't thinkg s or f will work but the wreck suggestion did inspring, expecially since "wreck" comes up alot in psychobilly culture.

Thanks
