Utopia On My Mind
Gotta turn away
I can't face the news today
Regimes and nations aligned
Utopia on my mind
Seems as if this whole damn world's gone insane
How can humankind be so inhumane
Gonna get away
Where I can kneel down and pray
For peace and love combined
Utopia on my mind
Politicians want all the votes they can buy
And in the end they only give us more lies
What more can I say
An honest man don't stand a chance these days
The truth is so maligned
Utopia on my mind
Utopia on my mind
John
John ,
I like this a lot mate ...
What style of music you have in mind ?
Trev... :?
Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
Thanks Trev
I'm not quite sure where I'm going musically yet. I've got a loose melody
that seems a little popish and I was rereading it just not I was hearing
some Buddy Holly chords.
The song seems a bit unfinished to me but a lot would depend on the music.
Any Suggestions?
John
Hey John ,
Back again  ..The reason why I asked , was simply because when I read the lyric , I was humming in mind "The Eagles " Just Too Busy Being Fabulous ..
Not too sure if you know this tune so here is a you tube of it ....
This has become my favorite Eagles lately and I don't know why ...

John,
The song seems a bit unfinished to me but a lot would depend on the music.
I think the song is finished and I like its simplicity. I dont think it needs to be any longer. Musically if this was mine I would go with a simple acoustic guitar, maybe picking a simple melody, and if you know someone with a flute then some of that in the intervals would sound good too. Nice song by the way.
cheers
Paul
The trouble with writing a song along these lines is trying to find a new way to say something that's been said a thousand times before....
There ARE a couple of those old chestnuts in there....
"I can't face the news today"
"Seems as if this whole darn world's gone insane"
Lines about politicians lying have been done almost to death as well - but you got away with that one, I like the line about buying votes that precedes it.
"How can humankind be so inhumane" - I love that line, though, and it more than covers the "world's gone insane" line preceding it.
"An honest man don't stand a chance these days
The truth is so maligned" - great stuff.
"Politicians want all the votes they can buy
And in the end they only give us more lies" - I just wonder if that last line might read better as, "And in the end they sell us only lies" - contrast between buying and selling?
Brave of you to tackle a theme that's been done so many times before - you managed to pull it off fairly well. It's not Classic Celt - but then again, it's a lot better than 99% of the self indulgent crud I hear passing for music these days. You could easily have used one old cliche after another, but you managed to avoid them for the most part - as for the others, well I don't think there are any more possible permutations along the theme of dishonest politicians! That's not just a cliche, it's a truism!
Reading back over what I've just written, it seems a little negative - it's not meant to be. The good points are far more prevalent than bad....I just think you picked a negative kind of subject. You know the old saying, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear?" - well, you tried your best with a pig of a subject, and while said purse might not be silk, at least it'd hold your money safely.
All in all, great effort on a difficult theme. Says Vic, who's come up with absolutely nothing. Zilch. Bupkuss. Not a sausage. Bugger all.............
Keep 'em coming, John.
:D :D :D

"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
Thanks Vic
I think you hit the nail (ooops another cliche  ) on why I'm feeling this is
unfinished. Your suggested line change is perfect and I would like to
have another look and some of the others.
And I still haven't settled on anything musically
John
