Beef Stew

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9528658

I'm going down to my local market
Buy a couple pounds of meat
Take it back on to the homestead
Gonna fix me up some good eats
Got some garlic celery onions
Carrots and potatoes too
Gonna hang around the kitchen
make me a pot of Beef Stew

Gotta cut it into little cubes
Just about one inch square
Break out my bestest kettle
Gonna brown my meat in there
Two three cloves of garlic
Chop my mirepoix make some roux
Gonna hang around the kitchen
make me a pot of Beef Stew

Add a little salt and pepper
Cause we don't want Vic getting sour
Then the vegetables and broth
Gonna simmer that for a few hours
Now it takes a little thyme
Tomato paste a bay leaf or two
Gonna hang around the kitchen
make me a pot of Beef Stew

Gonna thicken it up
Make sure it's seasoned just right
Break out our finest china
And set the table tonight
When my Baby comes home
Says "Honey what the hell did you do"
I'll say "I hung around the kitchen
made you a pot of Beef Stew"

I'll say "I hung around the kitchen
made you a pot of Beef Stew"

****************************

I think I have an idea for a video for this one.
Our hapless hero blissfully goes about his chore
as the whole rest of the household falls apart around
him. Kids jumping on the furniture breaking thing,
a storm knocking down a tree and it crashing through
the window, police and firetrucks responding to an
accident in the front yard and still he goes about
his cooking. When his spouse comes home she finds
a beautifully set table,a sink full of cooking utensils,
pots and pans and total mayhem.

Oh and lets not forget our friend Vic seated at the table
utensils in hand with an angry scowl on his face

Hi John,
as an avid cook I instantly liked this song - and it also made me very hungry for some beef stew.
A refreshing reminder that songs shouldn't be restricted to the obvious topics.

Thanks Martin,

I cook professionally so I tried to make sure the recipe
would work without going into all the measurements.
As an avid cook you should have enough knowledge
to make up a batch of stew. Of course you probably
have your own favorite recipe.

Heh heh, I'll have to see if I can make some beef stew just from this 'recipe'! (never tried making stew before, so that should be an interesting afternoon...)

Good work, Celt! I enjoyed this tune. Like Martin-6, it reminded me that songs needn't be about the obvious love, lost love, new love, etc., topics.Everything read easily, and I'm hungry now, so I consider that job done! :D

The only thing that crossed my mind was the reference to Vic - for a second, I thought the "honey" referred to later could also be construed as reference to him. There's nothing to make it clear that Vic isn't your honey. As I know the background (read the assignment), I know differently, but if you were e.g. performing this at RSJ next year, you might have a few people raising their eyebrows...

Anyway, that pedantic point aside, great song and what's for dessert?

I actually thought about the Vic line and tend to agree with you.
Maybe I could him into Uncle Vic or Grampa Vic.

Yup, I think that would work much better! Like I say tho, just a small point in an otherwise solid set of lyrics.

Hi John,

Nice job :D I had the same feeling reading through the lyrics thinking..."Hey, this might be a real receipe"....not being a professional chef myself, it looks like you got the technical details in.....It was right around here the details were over my head as well they should be "Chop my mirepoix make some roux"

I also like the back and forth between talking and singing.

Regarding "Cause we don't want Vic getting sour" a suggestion would be "Cause we/I don't want the Mrs. getting sour" but leaving it "Vic" is good tongue and cheeck for the SSG. Actually on first read, I thought "Vic" was a nickname or abbriviated name for "Vicor" like the local priest.

Regarding the video.....it sounds like a good senerio. Fiona Apple does a similar idea in her cover of the Beatles song "Across the Universe" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gLWTtlMwo4

Thanks for sharing.

James
