The title for this came from a cable TV program called “Calorie Commando†which struck me a great phrase. This song is about all those other people out there that I see every day doing something about their health. There is also a bunch of people at GuitarNoise https://www.guitarnoise.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20867&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
that are doing what they can, so this is a song for/about them, good luck guys.
Musically think Tony Joe White.

verse 1
Calorie Commandoes
Fighting on the streets
Pounding the pavement
Watching what they eat
chourus
They're a different kind of soldier
It's a different kind of war
With a different kind of outcome
But its one worth fighting for
Fighting for
verse 2
You see them every lunchtime
Running for their lives
With pained determination
They fight the war inside
chourus
They're a different kind of soldier
It's a different kind of war
With a different kind of outcome
But its one worth fighting for
Fighting for
verse 3
Calorie Commandoes
Fighting on their feet
They take responsibility
They take it to the street
chourus
They're a different kind of soldier
It's a different kind of war
With a different kind of outcome
But its one worth fighting for
Fighting for
Hi Paul,
Calorie Commando is a great line and you made wonderful use of it. What you have is really great though I would like to see some more verses . . . . maybe some battle zone images. But what do I know, I'm a paunch pilot myself.
Good work.
Neil
Hi
Calorie Commando , what a brilliant idea ..
I love how have turned this into a real "fight" ...
"They're a different kind of soldier
It's a different kind of war "
Love that ....
"You see them every lunchtime
Running for their lives"
Lovely piece of writting ..
Well done
Trevor
Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
Calorie Commando , what a brilliant idea
Well done
That about says it.
Good Job
John
Guessing you got the idea first - then the title - then the song....
LOL. Pbee, you did a good job....nice off-beat, off-the-beaten-track slant on things....
I like it....tight meter, very easy to put a tune to, one of those songs you can get the feeling for straight away....
:D :D :D
Vic
(Now if you could just write one along these lines....maybe "Cigarette Guerillas"....for those of us who are struggling to quit the weed.....)
"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
Oh and yeah - hope you're going to record this? Should be fun....

Thanks for the feedback you guys.
Neil, you're quite right, I think a bridge in there along the lines that you suggest would be great.
Trevor & John, I would love to be able to claim that phrase as one of mine but alas some cooking show got to it first. Actually it's a really neat program where this guy invents these low cal/fat versions of some guest's high cal/fat favorite food.
Vic, yeah I got the idea on one of my daily lunchtime “brisk†walks, it's always the same joggers that pass you, you recognize them but you have no idea who they are. The music for it is Em/// G/// A/ C/ Em/// and the chorus is D///C/// and back to Em for the last line with some congas in the background. If I get a chance next week Ill record it, unfortunately I've been a bit busy this week.
Cheers
Paul
Hi Paul
I'll add my praise to everyone else's - I thinl it's really well done.
good stuff
Bob
You are what you eat, eat well
I like it. I've missed your songs, Pbee. Glad to see you're still going strong.
Joe
I think all has been said.
One small thing ..... I love the way you have repeated " fighting for" at the end of the chorus to make it a double statement.... makes it feel like a bigger impact.
Looking forward to hearing it.
Go well

Calorie Commandoes
Goliath on the run
They fight the silent giant
The one they could become
chourus
Addictive kind of soldier
Addictive kind of war
Always wanting less yet
Always needing more
needing more
Ive changed the words a little bit which I think gives it better direction, hope you like it. Lead guitar courtesy of Gary Allen.

Paul,
Seems like this song can have many interpretations depending a lot on what the singer looks like and the "attitude" the song is song in.
....but having said that, I can't tell how you [the singer] feel about the subject by listening....are you mocking? encouraging? indifferently observering? :?
What kind of response do you get when you play it live?
James
A different kind of war indeed . . . one you fight . . . to lose.
KR2
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
Maybe another verse?
It's a different kind of battle
One you may not choose (or) One in which you choose
A battle against consumption
In a war (where/that) you fight to lose
(You) fight to lose
KR2
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
James, thanks for the feedback
....but having said that, I can't tell how you [the singer] feel about the subject by listening....are you mocking? encouraging? indifferently observering?
Definitely not mocking, and not indifferently observering either as it turned out. The song is written from an observer's perspective to make the point that weight control is a battle but in this case the winner is the one who looses the most. There is however a silent giant at work here, by the name of obsession, and just as weight control may have been the initial motivator, what I certainly found was that the exercise regime and the feeling of wellbeing became a powerful force, maybe at the expense of other aspects of ones life.
The song goes down very well live, as it has a strong beat that I really crank out on the guitar.
Ken, thanks mate, I like your verse. One of the reasons that it took so long to record was that I wasn't happy with it lyrically. I will keep it in its current form at least until after the gig and then have a another look at it.
Cheers
Paul
