There's a picture in the paper
Of a solemn fair haired boy
His mother's little darling
His father's pride and joy
He's staring at the camera
With all the pride that he can muster
Fill of grit, determination
Cockiness and bluster.
I know I've never met him
But I've seen his face before
Grinning in the yearbook
Or running through a store
Maybe on the playground
Swinging high above the ground
Maybe it was little league
But I've seen this boy around
The evening news starts with the story
Of the hero's big parade
All the townsfolk standing at the curb
With the signs that they have made
They're all lined up like statues
Waving flags in all their glory
They heard about his gallantry
They recognize the story
I saw his mothers haunted face
Staring blankly straight ahead
I know what she is feeling
I know what's in her head
She clutches the flag tight to her chest
To keep her heart from breaking
She'll never quite recover from
The toll this day is taking
I know I've never met her
But I've seen her face before
Waiting at the schoolyard
Or in line at the grocery store
Maybe on the playground
Kissing a bandaged knee
I know I've seen her face before
I know she could be me.

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.
Poignant and well done, katreich.
Two of my nephews, my sister's two babies, are in Iraq right now, so this touches a tender spot for me.

When my mind is free, you know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue, the guitar's comin' through to soothe me ~
Wonderful! I love the sentiment behind this and it is so well-executed.
The only thing that I could comment on is that this line caught me for length:
With all the pride that he can muster
It seems a skosh long to fit with the rest of the rhythm.
Kathy,
Great Song
Even when I realized where it was going it was still effective.
As Sarah said the line
With all the pride that he can muster
Seems a bit long as does the line
The evening news starts with the story
Both are easy to change if need be or they may work with
what you have in mind musicaly
Good Job
John
Hi Kat
This is very powerfully written. I'll merely add my praise to everyone else's.
Great stuff
