Been a whie since I checked the SSG - last few weeks or so, haven't been in the mood for music much. Or writing. Or basically, doing anything except just getting through one day after another. Last night, I found the electric upstairs in the spare bedroom - it's been there for weeks, haven't touched it since Marilyn passed away. (My partner, for those of you new to this forum - I see a few new names, welcome to the SSG!)
Anyway, I brought it downstairs - strings were almost black, so I changed them. Put some new D'Addario's on it - 9's - and plugged in for the first time for a long while.
Left the strings to settle overnight, thought about checking the SSG.....liked the topic, so started to write. This is what I came up with. I took a couple of liberties with the years, but who cares, right? 1973, I wasn't old enough to drive - and I got married in '79, not '78. have to go with the years that actually rhyme....but apart from those liberties, it's a true story. Give or take an exaggeration or two...
That Old Cortina
Had an old Cortina, back in '73,
I'd get behind the wheel and I'd feel so free,
I'd hit the road with the windows down,
Radio playing the latest sounds,
17 years old and a world full of wonders to see.
Sold it on, back in '78,
Had a wife and child, bought a family estate*,
Sensible car for a family man,
Never liked it though it ran,
Like a dream for years, till love turned to hate.
Gave her half the money when I sold that car,
My share of the spoils didn't go very far,
That was back in '84,
It'd be a long while till I drove once more....
Got an old Sierra back in 2001,
Used to get behind the wheel and drive for fun,
I'd hit the road with the sunroof down,
Cassette playing my favourite sounds,
Reliving my youth and hoping the beat goes on
And on and on and on....
And on and on and on....

Musically, I'm thinking hard rock, not quite metal....I have the main riff, I have the chords for the verses and the bridge - if I get a spare few minutes tomorrow (Saturday) I'll try and record a quick demo.

I always thought about getting back to the UK and getting myself an old Ford - I had them all at one time or another - Cortinas I, II, II, IV, Capris I, II and III, Escorts I & II (MkI 1300 GT - my first!) - the list goes on...and on...
The memories, oh the memories - the long hot summers and not a care in the world, 8 track blasting out the Beach Boys...
Always dangerous to try a turn back the clock, relive those days, but if you just got back behind the wheel maybe, just maybe....

Alright, another station wagon :!: I like the music player link and can almost hear the cracked speaker cone rattling now :lol: Any chance that an 8-track tape deck or CD player was in the progression?
Thats really lovely Vic nice one, i had the guitar in my hands after id read the first verse, started strumming away, the lyrics just sat right with me instantly and pulled a tune out, i really like the flow and i look forward to hearing your recording :)
