Yes, I use my fingers the same way smokehouse explained it (mostly). Sometimes I only use the first three fingers (bad habit, i think)

no if you play 1,3,5 it'sd a major chord and that doesn't sound dissonant, i think the third is rather removed because it sound more direct and roughe...

you could just stick to practicing the e-shape-barre chord a lot, then you would practice the three-finger powerchord automatically too.
