I usually change mine when they turn black. Also I have started learning lead and find slides much easier while the strings are a bit shiny.

I'd persist with learning the barre, practice it for a few minutes each day and you will improve in no time at all.

I've never tried that playing backwards technique. Will try later and see how it goes.
